Tennis Elbow Treatment
Tennis anyone?
Tennis isn’t the only activity that can lead to the development of tennis elbow. My San Diego Chiropractic practice has seen patients with tennis elbow that was caused by everything from tennis to turning keys.
The medical term most commonly used to label the symptoms associated with tennis elbow is lateral epicondylitis. Almost any time you see an ‘itis’ at the end of a medical word it means that there is an inflammatory process involved – lateral epicondylitis is no exception. Lateral epicondylitis is almost always due to overuse of the muscles that extend the wrist and attach on the lateral portion of the elbow.
People experiencing lateral epicondylitis typically have pain on the outside of their elbow that is aggravated by repetitive movements – especially racket sports. The pain from tennis elbow can make even simple grasping tasks difficult and if you happen to bump that elbow on a hard surface by accident (usually a door frame), be prepared because it is going to hurt.
Treating tennis elbow successfully requires a multifaceted approach. In my office we use electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, myofascial release and adjustments of the elbow joint. In conjunction with this care you have to use ice packs at home, avoid activities that aggravate your pain and try to identify the activities that started the condition in the first place. There are also nutritional supplements that are helpful for reducing inflammation and speeding healing that we recommend as well. Successful treatment requires patience and time.
Sincerely
Dr. Jones
