Scoliosis
Scoliosis can be a serious problem for some people.
In my San Diego Chiropractic center I have seen many patients with scoliosis over the years. While many of these patients come to me for treatment of back pain, neck pain and other symptoms, most of them come for treatment that is geared toward keeping their spines’ full range of motion and to help prevent their condition from worsening.
There are two basic types of scoliosis – functional scoliosis and structural scoliosis. Functional scoliosis is caused by conditions such as a shorter leg on one side (a short leg of up to 1/4 inch is normal for 80% of us by the way). The mechanics in play here is simple. The short leg causes a tilt in your pelvis which acts as the foundation for your spine. When the pelvis is not level, the spine curves in order to help keep your body upright over its normal center of gravity.
Structural scoliosis is not as easily treated as is functional scoliosis. Structural scoliosis is caused by conditions such as hemi-vertebra, spinal fractures and a host of developmental abnormalities. Even though total correction of a structural scoliosis may not be possible, there are still worthwhile benefits for treatment of this condition.
Functional scoliosis is not only treatable but often reversible. Chiropractic care helps correct scoliosis by keeping the joints of the spine freely mobile and aligned. Treatment also includes performing specific stretches and exercises.
