Runner’s Knee Treatment
If you are a woman who runs for exercise, you are prone to developing runner’s knee.
In southern California running and jogging are common activities. I treat patients with runner’s knee every day in my San Diego chiropractic office. Since San Diego has such mild temperatures, many people use running year round to help them stay in shape. The down side of this of course is that doing any activity year round creates the possibility of repetitive stress injuries.
The symptoms of runner’s knee are knee pain that is usually felt behind the knee cap but the actual location of the knee pain can be vague. The pain is often described as achiness and often comes on while running or jogging. Runner’s knee is often progressive and will worsen to the point where even a light, short jog can be aggravating. Runner’s knee also tends to cause pain with walking up and down stairs and hills. In many cases runner’s knee is accompanied by swelling and creaking feelings that are felt behind the knee cap.
Runner’s knee is caused by many conditions including:
1) Irregular Patellar Tracking
2) Weakness of the Muscles on the Medial Side of the Knee
3) Knock-knees
4) Repeated Falls on the Knees
5) Deep Squats
Treatment for runner’s knee is essential as this condition will worsen without care. Treatment includes basic Rest – Ice – Compression – Elevation (R.I.C.E.), nutritional support, specific strengthening exercises when appropriate and chiropractic treatment including knee joint manipulations and physiotherapy.
