Ankle Pain with Running
Do your ankles hurt during or after running?
In my San Diego Chiropractic practice I treat many patients with ankle pain that is experienced either during or after running. Running causes tremendous stress on the ankle joints making these joints prone to injury. Since many people use running as a exercise intended to help them loose weight, until that extra weight is lost it produces more stress through the joint.
Ankle pain can appear with relatively minor ankle issues as well as more serious injuries.
Typical ankle injuries that cause pain are:
1) Sprain / strains
2) Tendonitis
3) Achilles Tendon rupture
4) Fractures
5) Arthritis
In some cases the pain is noticeable while running but not during normal daily activities. In most cases, mild ankle pain that occurs during a run is either tendonitis or a sprain / strain type injury of one or more of the many ligaments / muscles of the ankle and foot. These injuries often happen as a result of a noticeable, specific injury but in some cases the injury is due to the repetitive stress that running itself places on the ankles. If these types of injuries are left untreated they can become problematic even during normal walking and can sometimes cause pain simply with weight bearing. In the long run, chronic inflammation in or around the joint due to tendonitis or chronic sprain / strains can lead to the onset of early arthritis.
More serious injuries such as Achilles tendon rupture or fractures require immediate medical attention as they are often so painful as to prevent weight bearing on the affected side.
Treatment for ankle sprain / strains and tendonitis include ice applications after running as well as chiropractic treatment that should include joint manipulations of the subtalar joint combined with various types physiotherapy.
Sincerely,
Dr. Steve Jones
